Better know so you're not asking, "What's the plan, Stan?"
The strategic plan is and should be a living document for every DMO. And, while many have created this document, even more that have a strategic plan fail to do regular check-ups on the progress made or lack, thereof. How do you stack up?
Strategic plans serve as your blueprint for short, medium and long term guidance and growth. Not having a strategic plan is akin to driving your car with a slow leak. Eventually, you'll be stuck, unable to move forward.
Strategic plans also demonstrate to your industry and those who fund your DMO that you are serious about what you do and have solicited the opinions of tourism partners, stakeholders and influencers on the current state of affairs and future expectations or your organization.
Lacking a strategic plan, DMOs will be challenged to make the difficult decisions on the priorities it sets without first having a frame of reference. That's why having a strategic plan is critically important. Now, more than ever, your strategic planning needs to be a fluid process, with constant evaluation of established goals, timelines and action steps.
COVID-19 has changed everything, and as recovery across the United States is realized in phases, your charge is to move from being reactive to proactive, with a heavy dose of flexibility.
